Week 4

Week 4 already!   Great job on the unit 1 packets, most of you scored 80% or above.

Today is an early release day because of back to school night.

I will offer extra credit if you show up with your  parents (which I'm excited to meet)

This week we start the exploration into the structure and organelles of cells.  It's truly remarkable that each of our individual cells (we have trillions of them) is a "universe" of its own.

This Friday there's a vocabulary quiz.  Please study your vocabulary all year.  If you know the terms you will increase your understanding of the subject matter (and success in the class.)

See everyone tomorrow, and hopefully tomorrow night as well.

Thursday 9/5/13

Test tomorrow and the packets are turned in.  Please remember to go through the packet and complete ALL pages.

For the "characteristics of life" lab we did in class you need to have at least 6 of the stations done.  If you could not complete all six use something from home and do it tonight.

You also should have done at least 2 of the stations today, I realize that the precision scale took some time.

Please remember to answer all the questions that go with the labs.

The class is weighted as the following :

60% packets/lab/class work/notebooks
30% Tests
10% Benchmark/participation/merit (behavior)

Do your best!!

Tuesday

Welcome back, I hope everyone had a nice three day weekend.

Today we're doing a lab observation activity getting back to the characteristics of life.

Tomorrow we'll be going over the SI or "System International" based on the metric system.

The unit test will be Thursday so please be sure to go over the information listed on the second page of your packet.

Here's an interesting video of lab grown human brains.  WOW!

Tuesday

Scientific method:

Make an observation

Ask a question

Make a hypothesis

design and conduct an experiment

Draw a conclusion

Remember to understand the difference between DEPENDENT and INDEPENDENT variables

Example-An experiment to determine how length of day effects plant growth.

Independent-Length of day
Dependent -Plant growth.

This too will be on the quiz this Friday

An example of human error.

Monday!

Welcome back for week 2

This week we'll be focusing on three things:  The scientific method, sources of sampling error, and the metric sysytem.

There will be a quiz on this material on Friday!

Remember that everywhere in the world uses the metric system in science even here in the US, it is important to know the basic conversions because we too will using the metric system all year.

Tomorrow we're doing a lesson on sampling error, and a demonstration.

The four main reasons for sampling error are the following (this is what you should know for the quiz)

1) Rounding, Precision, and Accuracy
2)Sampling (when was the sample taken)
3) Technical and human error (nothing is perfect)
4) Unintentional bias
